Hi everyone,
Sorry I couldn't make it in today...I'd make a joke about the events of yesterday, but really I've got a stomach bug.
Anyways, on to the final exams. In order to be exempt from taking the final, you needed a combined semester average of an 88 or higher, and you had to have 3 or fewer unexcused absences from class.
Only a handful of you had the semester average (some came close, 86s and 87s, but 88 was the minimum required).
For the attendance requirement, if you had over 3 unexcused absences in my class, I cross-referenced my attendance records with the ones posted by the House Office. The reason for this is because if you're out one day (let's say you're sick, and you see the doctor and get a note), I mark you as absent for that day. When you return to school and turn in that doctor's note, your attendance record for that day changes to an excused absence, but the system doesn't automatically change my class attendance for that day to reflect that.
So, I compared your in-class attendance record with what your House Office has. If my records showed an unexcused absence where the Office shows an excused one, I gave you credit and that became an excused absence.
So having said that, the people who are exempt from the Final are as follows: Abby Berard, Kendra Currie, Nosferatu, and Andrew Zanella. Everyone else is required to take the final exam.
If you believe there is an error on my part, feel free to shoot me an email this weekend, and I'll go over it with you.
As far as the final exam goes, there will be a multiple choice component, a fill-in-the-blank section, the short answer, and the thematic essay. The fill-in-the-blank section will only cover our current unit on international relations. I do not plan on giving you folks a work bank for this section, so make sure you know those terms! As for the thematic essay, I'm not giving you the question in advance because this question will be more of a test of your critical thinking abilities than simple rote memorization. In other words, it will test your ability to analyze and synthesize information based on what you've learned over the course of the semester. If you have any questions before our class meets on Monday, please shoot me an email.

Unlike the amendment test, I cannot scale the final. Please keep this in mind as you begin studying this weekend. Several of you are in danger of failing the course if you don't do well enough on this.
